Bash quickie: loop N times, without doing math

I thought that the only way to do such type of loop in Bash would require something like "n=$(($n+1))" within the loop, with the loop being conditioned to "n" adding up to whatever you want, such as "until ((n==30)) ; do". But you can actually do "for i in {1..20} ; do <whatever> ; done". That's somewhat similar to Basic's "for i=1 to 20 ; whatever ; next i".

But it won't work with variables for the starting and ending numbers....

One of the aspects about Linux that I love and sometimes hate, is the ever present opportunity to learn something new. Recently, Linux has seemed to me like a much admired friend, that routinely surprises you with some cool and new thing to be admired I've worked exclusively with Linux as my PC of choice for about 5 years, and am currently running Slackware-14 64 bit. I can honestly say, that from the very beginning, not a month has passed where I haven't learned at least one new facet of Linux....

Posted 10-21-2012 at 08:39 PM by rocket357 (Musings on technology, philosophy, and life in the corporate world)

I was driving to the store tonight. As I drove through the (seemingly) deserted stretch of parking lot, I came up to a man, woman, and child walking through the dimly lit area. I noticed that they were uncomfortably close to the road, so I started to fade to the left to avoid them. As I approached, the man continued narrowing the gap between my 2 1/2 ton vehicle and his body. His wife wisely stayed to the right with their child...but then an amazing thing happened...

Posted 10-21-2012 at 11:36 AM by davetesc

Each time I think I'm getting somewhere I try to do something new and realise how little I know!!!
Having found a cheap usb wifi dongle I thought it would be easy to connect my two laptops so I could just send files between the two without using a memory stick, guess again, obviously I'm missing the simplest of steps but plodding on. :-)

A long time ago I stopped using Java programs because of the proprietary aspect. But I recently tried out Iced Tea on my Gentoo box and it seems to work pretty well, at least with one program, Planet M.U.L.E:

Planet M.U.L.E. is a free clone of a old economics video game, but with much better graphics. It is rather addicting, but somewhat frustrating if you don't take the time to read the how-to-play guide, which explains in detail all the...
