Gmplayer/mplayer-gui standard package works perfectly on Debian testing (Wheezy)

Posted 11-21-2012 at 01:48 PM by the dsc (linux-related notes)

To me it seems that the problem is actually with ffmpeg (deb-multimedia's), but I'm not willing to test it. I think it somehow interferes with mplayer-gui/gmplayer.

Just a few days ago I had an Wheezy install where I had gmplayer working, but very inconsistently, I would double click some video file and in five...

Sure, commercial products exist, but are usually crippled - recordings cannot be exported for long time storage.
A PC running some kind of PVR software will do the trick, but drains power and makes noise. No go.

So, I thought to myself: What's always on in my home, and does not consume oodles of energy?

Slow DNS lookups

Posted 11-16-2012 at 06:11 PM by serafean

Symptoms : KDE fails to load google/wikipedia sometimes. firefox too, less often.

ping was the main tool in this case.
What I found was that
got an IP to ping very fast, however before anything appeared onscreen, it took up to 5 seconds. Pinging the IP address however returned immediately.
On a hunch, I tried disabling...
