Suggestions

Posted 06-08-2014 at 12:04 PM by rokytnji

This is my take on new Linux users migrating from Windows for what ever reasons. Usually any more when I see the word of suggestion in a thread title. I avoid it like the plague now.

The reasoning in my mind is as follows.

One looses their living abode due to some disaster that leaves them homeless.

You show up and offer living quarters for free with no strings attached.

A day or two later they show up on your doorstep and complain why...

NEWS 140607 re. Exton|Defender based on Slackware 14.1

I’ve made a new version of Exton|Defender 64 bit based on Slackware 14.1. It uses Mate 1.8.1 as Desktop environment and kernel 3.14.5-x86_64-exton. The Mate Desktop environment is not included in Slackware’s official repositories. To be able to install Mate in Exton|Defender I had to add Salix‘s repositories. The MATE Desktop Environment is the continuation of GNOME 2. It provides an intuitive and attractive desktop environment...

Restore some of chrome/ium performance by ditching extensions

Posted 06-05-2014 at 08:42 PM by the dsc (linux-related notes)
Updated 06-05-2014 at 08:44 PM by the dsc

It may be obvious at hindsight but took me a while to try it.

Chrome/ium already has the advantage of being able to enable/disable extensions without restart, so it's really a good practice, compared with Firefox. You can sometimes enable an extension just while you're using it.

I think the particular extension that was causing most of the slowness was/is Tampermonkey, which is sort of a scriptish/greasemonkey for Chrome. I think that there may be some bug with it because...

NEWS 140604

MeX Linux is now based on Linux Mint. (I.e. Linux Mint 17 – codenamed “Qiana“, released 20140531 and on Ubuntu 14.04 – codenamed “Trusty Tahr“, released 20140417). All packages in MeX Linux have been upgraded to the latest version by 140604. Cairo-Dock has been added. The most important change is that I have replaced the install program Ubiquity with MeX Installer. The installation to hard drive is now so simple that a 10 year old child can do it. Watch a SLIDESHOW of the...

Run your Slackware 64 bit system with the latest stable kernel – 3.14.5!

Posted 06-02-2014 at 12:22 PM by exton (Exton's Blog)

I have compiled a very useful (as I think) 64 bit kernel for Slackware 12.0 – 14.1 and/or all Slackware derivatives. For example Slax, Zenwalk, SlackEX and Exton|Defender. The kernel is compiled exactly the same way as Slackware’s latest kernel huge. “My” kernel 3.14.5-exton has even more support for new hardware, etc. Kernel 3.14.5 is the latest stable kernel available from Kernel.org. Released (20140531).
