So, I bought an iMac

27" iMac.
So, I will be even less inclined to participate here at LQ.

Couple of annoyances on this new host, but NBD for a Professional.

Why? You may axe.
One reason, Siri is fully integrated into the desktop. I can speak and it responds.
23 years in IT and I am tired of typing.

Peace Out!

Pay attention to ";" versus "&&" in bash aliases

Posted 09-27-2017 at 03:54 PM by the dsc (linux-related notes)
Updated 09-27-2017 at 03:57 PM by the dsc

Or maybe avoid it altogether, it's probably some sort of well known linux/unix rule that someone wrote a long time ago.

It's possibly something that seldom ever is a problem to anyone, but it was for me.

I had this as an alias for "mv"

Code:
echo "use mv -i to avoid overwriting files with the same name; this is an alias to mv -i" ; mv -i
Then at some point I was doing an one liner that would scan symlinks' "realpaths"...

Posted 09-27-2017 at 02:01 PM by brianL

Just bought a new toy: refurbished Dell Precision T3600, for £350. Very good condition.
Intel Xeon E5-1650
16 GB RAM
NVidia Quadro 2000 graphics card
1 TB HDD
Very nice!
Only problem so far: can't install Slackware. Hopefully soon resolved. See thread in Slackware Installation forum.

AndEX (Android-x86) Marshmallow 6.0.1 – 64bit – with GAPPS and Netflix (!) working very well – Build 170923

Posted 09-23-2017 at 12:33 PM by exton (Exton's Blog)

My build of Android-x86_64 Marshmallow 6.0.1 has GAPPS pre-installed. I.e. Google Play Services, Google Play Store, Google Chrome, Gmail and more apps. For example: Netflix, Spotify, Firefox, Aptoide App Manager, Termux and Clash of Clans. The ISO is called android_x86_64-marshmallow-6.0.1-gapps-netflix-970mb-170923.iso. AndEX Marshmallow 64bit Build 170923 is totally error-free (as far as I know). Everything just works!

systemd haters resource page

Posted 09-20-2017 at 11:05 PM by ttk (Unpopular Positions: One Geek's Take)

I've been putting links to relevant systemd resources into this page for my own reference, but enough folks have appreciated it that I thought y'all might like it too:

http://ciar.org/ttk/public/systemd.html

It's very ugly and primitive at the moment. I might turn it into a "real" web page later, or might not.
