A Bit About Digital

This essay is to clarify some common misunderstandings about how digital data is created, stored and used.

In the beginning.
By now, we've all heard that computers 'only use ones and zeros', and mostly we've come to accept the apparent contradiction without really understanding what it means. The statement is true, if not somewhat over-simplified. The use of only 'ones' and 'zeros' is another way of saying that digital devices are binary in...

Mplayer configuration tips

Setting the default volume for mplayer and gmplayer

Despite of having different config files, "config" and "gui.conf", this is one configuration that gmplayer inherits from "config", and will be ignored if set on "gui.conf", with the volume being reset to max and the line in the config file removed. Posted 07-06-2012 at 04:08 PM by drask

Okay, I've been frustrated with the prune option of the find command for a long time. I have a folder in my home directory called "mount" where I have directories onto which I mount the foreign filesystems I work with on a regular basis. I often know that there is a file containing a word or phrase that I need to find, and it is somewhere in my home directory. I've been trying to use prune to skip searching that particular folder, especially when grepping for something inside a file. For...

Ante up

I used to work for a software/hosting company that half-a$$ed every expenditure they could. They put in a residential cooling unit in one of their datacenters because it was considerably cheaper than the industrial units, they ran all traffic over a single, flat network rather than spend the cash to build proper service/backup networks, they purchased Dell switches instead of Cisco switches, no bonding/teaming on production connections, etc...

During that time, I designed what I...
