Updated 10-18-2012 at 02:36 AM by MystikMitch (Added thought)

Although,I still prefer a computer anyday over a "Tablet" I am so excited. My favorite desktop Environment KDE is coming now to the Tablet world. I may reconsider how limited, walled garden, d*mbed down tablets really are in my views. Here is one link but I'm sure one can find if they have a will on own time to more. here: http://makeplaylive.com/. Ok! and here: http://www.mobilelinuxnews.com/2012/...n-coming-soon/ The Vivaldi "Tablet"...

In preparation for an anniversary

Posted 10-16-2012 at 06:20 PM by rocket357 (Musings on technology, philosophy, and life in the corporate world)

It's been nearly a year since I started working at Rackspace, so I've been thinking alot over the past few days about how my life has changed since I started this insane wild ride. Aside from the expected "I live in San Antonio now", or "I make better money now", or even "I can't begin to explain how much I've learned in the past year", there are deeper, more subtle changes that have had oddly profound effects on my day to day life.

parallel port with cups (LPT)

Posted 10-16-2012 at 06:07 AM by ted_chou12

Hi, I am tired of USB port so I went ahead and tried to use a parallel port to connect my printer:
First check if the lp mod is added:
Code:
lsmod | grep par
if not:
Code:
parport_pc 22292 1
parport 29012 2 parport_pc,lp
Then do:
Code:
modprobe lp
Make sure you add this to /etc/rc.d/rc.local, to ensure the code runs everytime during boot.
Now check again:
Code:
lsmod | grep par
"lp" should now already be displayed....

Good security practices.

Often people wonder how to really effectively protect their PCs regardless of what operating system they have on it. People think, "I can buy or download this one program and automatically I'm fully protected." They never realize how wrong they are. Just installing a toolkit doesn't give you the best protection possible. here's a few basic ways I've found to really stretch the abilities of your toolkits to not only give you proper protection, but full administration over what goes on in...

Example script to run and manage a service (tcpdump) with managed logging.

I made this script as a reply to a question on a thread before. The accidentally simplified complexity of it amazes me so I thought that it would be nice to post this on a blog as well. Original thread: https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...cpdump-800385/

The script runs and manages a service (tcpdump). It could also automatically delete files older than C days, and reduce the size of a logfile if it's already larger than N bytes....
