The art of training a new employee

Posted 07-21-2015 at 12:46 AM by binary_pearl

This blog is a rough draft of an idea that I just came up with, to explain how I go about training new Linux admins/engineers. My goal here is to help people who need to train new employees bring people up to speed as quickly as possible, without burning them out in the process. Think of the 'Price is Right' 'spinwheel' where the goal is to get as close to $1.00 without going over.

Over the last 5 years, I have now trained 6 Linux engineers / admins, whatever you want to call...

Seek Intel running SolidWorks through Virtualbox through ISO of Win7 on Ubuntu1404

Posted 07-20-2015 at 05:51 PM by Peter T

I am wondering if anyone here has tried
installing VirtualBox on Ubuntu 1404; then installing the 'open source' ISO
of Windows7 [XP,8,or any other Distro] on VirtualBox; then installing
SolidWorks on the VirtualBox / Windows 'Frankensteined
partition', within said Ubuntu 1404 platform, as SolidWorks is
incompatible with Linux based systems. [or so I'm told]
[Long way around the barn ?...Do I need my head examined ?]

Or,,,, would I be better...

The Celebrity Life of a Blogger

Posted 07-20-2015 at 02:16 PM by rocket357 (Musings on technology, philosophy, and life in the corporate world)

It never ceases to amaze me how people who make their money in the lime light get in an uproar because they can't take a piss without someone reporting about it. Now, I'm all for fair treatment of other people, and yes, the US (in particular) has shifted to "money is more important than self integrity". Perhaps it's not a shift, per se, but rather a gross realization of a long term change in culture. But I still amazes me.

The point is, this planet isn't...

Exton|OS 64 bit with Mate and kernel 4.0.0-4-exton :: build 150719

Posted 07-19-2015 at 03:20 PM by exton (Exton's Blog)

Exton|OS build 150719 is based on Ubuntu 15.04 64 bit (released April 23, 2015) and Debian Jessie (Debian 8). Exton|OS’s ISO file is a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive. You can then even run Exton|OS from the USB stick and save all your system changes on the stick. I.e. you will enjoy persistence! I’ve found two scripts which make the installation to USB very simple. The scripts are quite ingenious. My tests show that they work flawlessly...

Changing username of your machine

Posted 07-19-2015 at 11:05 AM by Upendra Pratap Singh

Always use usermod command to change username or the properties of the user like UID etc.

Do not go for manual editing in /etc/shadow, /etc/passwd and /etc/groups file to change your username, password or UID etc.

It corrupts the entries so much so that you will not be able to access other disk partitions other than the one in which Ubuntu is installed. Also you will not be able to login as root.
