NEWS 20170209 about exGENT
I’ve made yet a new version (20170209) of exGENT based on Gentoo Linux. Now with Xfce 4.12.1 and kernel 4.9.8. It is for the 64 bit architecture. I call it exGENT 2017 Xfce4 Live DVD. It replaces version 20160123. The ISO file is of 2590 MB due to the fact that this version has a lot of packages pre-installed. Despite this exGENT version 170209 runs surprisingly fast from DVD or USB. Even in VirtualBox and VMware. Faster than most other Linux live systems. All installed...

The danger of '.desktop' files!

Posted 01-31-2017 at 12:36 PM by GazL (GazL's Gazette)

There was an interesting post on r/linux today outlining some of the insanity relating to the use of .desktop files on linux desktops. The information is nothing new -- it's been like this for years and is also why you'll pry my window-manager+xterm working environment from my cold dead hands -- but it's one of the clearest examples of the dangers I've seen on the subject.

If you're unaware of this stuff, you shouldn't be. Go have a read:

This is especially true with a distro like Slackware that takes the traditional approach and tries to honour the intentions of upstream rather than put its own layer of abstraction over the configuration of your system. Keeping track of what you've changed can be a pain, especially should you ever need to re-install. Here,...
