upgrade to Slackware 12.2

The upgrade from slack 12.1 to slack 12.2 went fairly well. There were only a few issues, mostly with third party packages.

On the first boot, rc.serial made a lot of output complaining of nonexistant devices. But this was only a one time occurrence.

fbpager no longer works with the new fluxbox, but there has been some recent development with fbpager so there may be a new release at some point that will solve this. Tried fluxter with no success. For now I have switched...

Gentoo on the Thinkpad x61s - Progress

Posted 12-13-2008 at 01:46 PM by zsejk

So, I've made some progress with the Gentoo idea. The basic install went pretty well, following the installation book by Gentoo. After that of course I got in the circular blocking hell, so now I'm running *with* e2fsprogs and -libs, but without ss and com_err. Quite unsure what those do, so I will have to research that soon.

Got wireless working by emerging wpa_supplicant and iwl4965-ucode, just like this friendly guy suggests:

Obligatory Introductory Post

Posted 12-12-2008 at 07:30 PM by rocket357 (Musings on technology, philosophy, and life in the corporate world)

Since everyone sorta introduces themselves in their first blog post, here it goes:

To put food on the table for my family, I manage 170+ high-availability databases and 110+ data-warehousing/reporting databases. Lots of PostgreSQL, lots of (sigh) SQL Server. I'm an OpenBSD fanatic. I love Python, and for kicks I like to learn. I'm currently studying the Intel Software Developer's Manuals and I haven't worked on my sourceforge project (geoxplanet) in quite some time. I'd put geoxplanet...

Virtualization on Acer 5720

Posted 12-12-2008 at 03:50 AM by mallux

If anyone is thinking of buying the £350 Acer Aspire 5720 from Tesco Direct with a view to running fully virtualized guests (as I did), don't bother. The VT functionality has been disabled in the BIOS, even though the T7500 processor is completely capable of it. There is no option in the BIOS screen to enable it, and no BIOS updates on the web site.

I put this in an email to Acer technical support and was told "the issue you have described is one of a software related nature"...
