Managing multiple sound cards (along with no sound in flash/youtube etc.)

If you have multiple sound cards, installing pulse volume manager is almost a must (IMHO).

1. Set the default sound cards from the pulse volume manager

2. From the 'Playback' tab, you should be able to 'shift' the sound stream to the appropriate sound card that you want when you're playing something in that application e.g. playing a youtube video in Firefox...

Printer Installation/Printing

  1. It's important to check if the printer is 'enabled' from the Admin settings
  2. It's important to set the location of the printer to the hostname i.e. if your computer hostname is 'MYCOMP', the location of the printer should say 'MYCOMP' -- at least in two distros i've seen it to be left blank (and as a result printer was not working -- it was showing up on the menus -- but not doing anything)...

Installing gconf-editor (to stop showing volumes on Desktop)

In Fedora, after making a small and harmless change in my fstab following what it said here, ALL the partitions started mounting and APPEARING on my desktop. That made the desktop look totally obnoxious.

Here's what I had to do.

I had to install the 'gconf-editor'

Code:
su -c 'yum -y install gconf-editor'
and then I launched the gconf-editor from the Applications -> System Tools -> Confguration Editor

Small detail about menu.lst

After the last line in menu.lst (typically "chainloader +1"), you NEED to give a blank line

Fedora 10, was not loading because of that...
