A Windows weakness

Thinking like a Mac-user again, I came up with this.

If, in Windows XP, the Desktop is, as it is in Mac OS X, a legitimate and discrete folder, then why, when one has "Command Prompt Here" and "Terminal Here" type patches to their context menu, is one unable to use them by simply right-clicking on some unoccupied space in the Explorer Desktop? Why, indeed, does one have to follow the monotonous path of "My Computer/C/Documents and Settings/[username]"*,...

Webcam in Ubuntu

I have a cheap webcam I bought last year! it's a Mikomi 1.3mp webcam with mic.When I type "lsusb" I get this "0c45:612c Microdia PC Camera (SN9C110)". It won't work with Kopete, but it will work with Ekiga?.

I am thinking of buying a Logitech Quickcam 3500. I get conflicting opinions from the web, some say it will work some say it won't. Even Logitechs website confuses the situation (well it does me). I am not knocking Logitech though because I think it's great...

Alien Environment

I've just booted into XP Pro on my laptop for the first time in I don't know how long. Weeks? Maybe months? And it feels strange. A bit like a long-term Windows user must feel on first using GNU/Linux. At least I have Cygwin to give some sense of familiarity. There's no doubt that I feel more at home on Linux, in particular Slackware, than I do on Windows. But, having said that, I still intend to keep XP, for the sake of variety. But again, if it wasn't already on, and I had the choice to install...
