Distro Hopping

Posted 10-31-2012 at 11:50 AM by scorpioofthewoods

We all do it at one time or another. At some point(s) the urge hits you for whatever reason to try another distro. So lately I have been distro hopping.

I was happily using Debian Sid some time ago for quite awhile. But then my time became limited and things got a little crazy when Gnome 3 started rolling in. So at that time I switched to Ubuntu. Ubuntu is great when you don't have much time to play with your OS and just want things to work (for the most part). I have used it for...

Better filtered mail notifications

Posted 10-31-2012 at 09:18 AM by sag47

Note: this post is not about mail filtering but about getting better notified on mail that is already filtered. I will assume you have an understanding of bash scripting and how grep works. This includes modifying paths within scripts for your own environment. This is one of those hack together one job scripts.

Background

I am a Linux Systems Administrator at Drexel University and we're primarily a RedHat shop. My work day is high in volume with communication on...

Changing the default keyboard on Ubuntu 12.04 Live CD

Posted 10-30-2012 at 08:07 AM by avarus (Tim's Bio-Linux tips)

Hi,

This isn't a user tip - as you can probably see I didn't do very well keeping up on those. Instead here's a rather technical and long-winded commentary about what is going on regarding setting the default keyboard on the Ubuntu 12.04 Live CD, from a British perspective. If the first thing I have to do in each course is to get the students...

Posted 10-29-2012 at 04:52 PM by hydraMax (Bits and Pixels)

Gentoo is overall a great distribution, but unfortunately it is not dedicated to free software with the same determination as distributions like Trisquel and gNewSense. If you have been running Gentoo for a while, but are not familiar with this issue, you may be surprise to learn how much non-free software is in your system, from application software to the kernel.

The offset to this, however, is that built-in Gentoo mechanisms make it very easy to change this configuration, so as...

Pi projects expand.

Posted 10-29-2012 at 08:14 AM by peonuser

Found an image to allow the Raspberry Pi act as a thin client for ltsp. You do not have to put the arm arch on the server. X86 client runs in a virtual machine. Works fine with our U-10.04 ltsp server.

Found an Android image for the Raspberry Pi, but have not tested it.

Wanted to make a Raspberry Pi pc, but ran into legacy hardware problems.
