It escapes the dollar sign in its password or else it gets the "login denied" again

Posted Yesterday at 07:13 PM by rocket357 (Musings on technology, philosophy, and life in the corporate world)

Fun case today. Customer complains that they cannot login to an Oracle instance.

I check the IP. It's wrong. Dear customer, please use the correct IP, which is $some_private_ip.

Customer then complains that they get an error that the service is unknown. I double check, they should be using "$dbname", not "$dbname\-db". I explain.

Customer then complains that they are getting a login denied error. I suspect there is something...

I'm a bit of a security nut. It's true...I'm a tad paranoid, and it shows in the design of my home network.

Given the paranoia, it's really only a matter of time before my over-arching power-Nazi stance on security steps on the toes of my other household members, namely my wife. She really lost it one day when unbound failed (well, it didn't *fail*, but it wasn't exactly working as *she* intended). I attempted to step her (an avid Windows power user with zero experience with the...

Chropera seems to behave a little bit better than Chrome/ium

Updated 01-27-2015 at 06:09 PM by the dsc

Just pointing out just in case someone finds oneself annoyed by Chrome/ium seemingly entering in neverending loops and reading or writing who-knows-what in the HDD for too long. I have the impression that the new Opera behaves somewhat better in this regard, but I really haven't used it as much, so could be just a matter of time until it hangs just as much.

Unfortunately, however, the new GUI is still somewhat like just a crippled Chrome GUI -- scrolling the wheel over the tab-bar...

WHAT’S NEW IN VERSION 150126?
1. ExLight is now based on upcoming Ubuntu 15.04 (alias Vivid Vervet) and Debian Jessie.
2. I have upgraded the Desktop environment Enlightenment (Beauty at your fingertips) to version 0.19.1.
3. I have replaced kernel 3.16.0-21-exton with kernel 3.18.0-10-exton.
4. ExLight’s ISO file is now a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive. You can then even run ExLight from the USB stick and...

The linux war stories: episode 1 - SCO...got to start somewhere

Posted 01-25-2015 at 11:11 PM by binary_pearl

While I should keep the company I worked for a secret out of respect; it was a major retail chain in the US with about 7000 locations at the time.

The year was 2007. I had only been working for 2 years in my career, and I had already advanced to the infrastructure team. At that time we were still using SCO Unix 5.0.5 or 5.0.7 on all of the servers at each location.

Out of the normal chaos, a semi-urgent request came. Apparently there were certain server models that...
