Load balanced cluster with Raspberry Pies

Posted 08-13-2013 at 03:19 PM by Pyplate

I finally got around to doing it. I've set up a 4 node Raspberry Pi cluster. It's not that powerful, but setting it up has been good practice.

I used an old PC running Lubuntu as a load balancer. I just installed Apache and I'm using Apache's balancer module. I installed Lubuntu because I'm using a very old PC that has 512MB of RAM. The PC is more powerful than the cluster, but if I just used the PC as a server, I wouldn't have learned anything about load balancing.

I don't expect performance to be great, but initial testing shows that my cluster can definitely handle more traffic than a single Pi.

I'm not using an SQL database in my site (yet), so there's no database server in my cluster. In order to sync the workers I've set up some scripts to package the site into .tar.gz files, transfer them to each node and unpack the site.

At some point over the next few days I'll publish some figures on performance.
