I have been testing various distros...
not just slacking off

Slackware, Debian, BSD, Unbuntu and variations of
currently I am using Unbuntu 9.04

I installed it- ran almost by itself, about 15 minutes

rebooted logged in clicked on the Wifi signal icon, logged into my Wifi network, ran the Update Manager
setup my display for 1024x768 and enabled the visual effects...that all took about 15 minutes
( I have 15 monitor and default is 800x600)

then I ran FireFox, OpenOffice, some games and as many other graphics apps as I could find

I am really impressed by how much more responsive and seamless applications work on my system under Unbuntu

I have a P4, 1 GB DDR1, 80 GB HD
(yes, it is several generations out-of-date)

I have a confession,
I did download and install the Win7 RC
mainly because it was free
the RC is the Ultimate ed - $399

After using it and Unbuntu as well as PCLinux, and many other distros.. Win7 is actually not bad, but it simply not good enough to justify the expense

Besides much of Windows7's "new and improved" stuff is
actually stuff we in the Linux world now take for granted

In addition, I have several technical issues that have do with networking, and communication- I have many but I will just highlight one

Win7 RC introduces an authentication procedure and
data encryption for "Home Workgroup" (pier to pier) file sharing

the auth step involves writing down or printing
a generated alpha-numeric randomized password
then snicker-netting it over to the your pier's pc
and typing that in

I cannot begin to describe how laughable this is
as well as the various ways that could have been taken
to bring MSFT Windows File Sharing into the modern age

under most Linux distros, support for modern, standard
protocols and applications exist
( wont get into naming them all here)

Why is MSFT bent on creating there own?
Ok, they can if they want- there are MSFT after all

but can we at least expect them to come up with stuff that
rivals the Standard Modern protocols and applications
for networking and communications?

no re-inventing of the wheel is needed
but if you are - it should be an actual improvement
not a step backward

OK, Apple does it too...but they are good it at!

this makes - interoperability even harder as Windows7
moves toward adoption by business and industry- or rather they are forced to adopt out of fear of non-support and other issues

My hope and somehow I feel futile dream is that
MSFT decides or be forced to acknowledge the Standards
for Protocols, Security, Communication and Networking that everyone else works on

Wireless G PCI card did install and works fine
I made a newbie mistake, corrected, work great

Again you need at least a P4 system or newer for
PCLinuxOS, but I will try the MiniME version
on my older systems

Damn Small Linux

last posted excellent results from testing DSL LIVECD
on a PIII Dell 4000 Laptop

I recently did a LIVECD run and install on an old
PII NEC workstation, installed the Wireless G PCI
card and everything worked flawlessly
Internet browsing and web apps worked great

Only real difference is the having to set BACK-UP of
User data

Since DSL is minimalist distro, no WINE/JAVAtesting

Next I will be testing

DreamLinux, and lining up other Internet-ready,
Internet-only distros

looking for a good Linux Server
to netboot PC's and use local HDD for user data only

keeping you posted
unlike most bloggers, I actually have a life and a job.
Ha ha ha , just kidding.

I have been testing PClinuxOS, Damn Samll Linux

-----------------------------------------------

PCLinuxOS is a great distro. The install was a snap.I was able to use everything write out of the install.I mean everything; networking, internet, MS apps-Wine, viewing Quicktime, WMP movies, really cool stff.

Hardware installation was also very easy. The only thing I had a problem with was a Netgear Wireless PCI 802.11g card that I would needed drivers for.

Also a problem was installing on a DELL Inspirion 4000 PIII. The Live CD freezes half-way through the boot process.

Again I am looking for out of the box- functionality. Probably could change the boot kernel to syslinux, and it would work.

As far internet centric apps that are cross-platfrom compatible, PCLinuxOS looks good so far. Netbeans runs and delpoys Glassfish v.2 and v.3. Nice!

I could totally depoly PCLinuxOS in a business network settitng. As long as the laptops and PC's are all P4 and newer.

-----------------------------------------------

DSL is a new distro for me, I started testing last week.

It did install on the Dell Inspirion 4000. Everything works well. Needs more drivers for Wifi cards. My CISCO AIRONET card works great, the TrendNet G card did not install.

However, I am impressed with the look and feel of DSL. Very quick, modern and seemless for a mininalist linux disrto.

I have not fully explored DSL yet but I am pretty stoked about DSL so far.

I am, however, a little worried about the future of DSL. I would like to see a blog update on this from them.

A Wish list

First

I would like to post a wish list.
If you know of answers to these please post them.

Simpe internet only linux distro.

Who needs any non-internet-enable app anyway. I would like to find a simple distro that only comes with a fully capable modern fully integrated internet browser, I don't a somewhat disabled internet browser, because of missing stuff, like flash, media player, gcc or some lib to interpret or compile it. Nor do I want a complex large distro that takes up a lot of space.

To be ported to Linux; Apple Quicktime, Adobe Air, Blueray, DirectX, etc...

Just some of the media types and graphic platform engines I would like to see developed to run native on the Linux platform.

Currently I run mplayer that plays an older Quicktime format but cannot stream the new Apple Quicktime movie format.

Also Adobe Air is not available. And Safari 4's Coverflow does not work at all. DirectX can be run using Wine but don't we all really want a native
DirectX solution?

Linux Information Services distro and Web 2.0 Bundle

A real MS Server killer for the I.T. guy who does not happen to be the Linux equivalent of Yoda, or Darth Sidious.

I would like to find a Free Open Source Linux bundle that comes complete and integrated with Web Server, Application Server, Content Distrubtion, EMail server, Security/encryption protocols, MySql, JavaEE, Flash, Python, PHP.

An Open Source Information Services bundle. Like fully integrated admin controls for TCP-IP V4 or V6, DNS, DHCP, VPN, Tunneling, Firwalls, full workstation/user permissions desktop profiles, integrated NFS, application server, MySql database server. Plus, ability to enable Server Clustering.

Capable of being added to any Linux Server, without having to bring together all the dependencies and working out of the system integration manually. An awesome install would take care of all that. Plus, Integrated Control Panel that optionally encapsulates or reveals any degree of complexity or logging desired. Also, one could sign up for updates.

Keep you posted,
