Started a new contract job, so I have not had the time to tinker as I have wanted to. At least they feed us for free. The way to a developer's weak points.

Saw an article where someone had interfaced an old isa sound card to the parallel port. That had me thinking about using micro-controllers with the old isa stuff. Daydreamed of using a parallax propeller chip and several old sound cards to make one awesome computer controlled organ. Wish I had the engineering background to put...

Xmas tree lights.

Posted 11-25-2010 at 09:10 PM by peonuser

Well I grabbed some 2n3904 transistors to act as solid state switches and now have the computer controlled xmas tree (battery powered) lights up and running. Still have to tweak the circuit and the code a bit though. The basic circuit before adapting it. Planning to use the parallel breakout cable to connect things to the pc. Good place for code and interfacing:

Oracle: a silly command line game in bash. Nothing to do with the company. I like to use the pc subroutine as it makes it easy to place text on the screen where one wants. If you set your screen to boot in a higher resolution than normal, you can put a large amount of data on the screen in real time and do it without worrying about scrolling. In the process of writing a spreadsheet, editor and database with bash. Oracle (remember chmod +x oracle)

Then of course you have to install sphinx and festival or epeak. If you do all that then you could make a paper mache head using servos to control the mouth and other parts for some interesting fun. Ten times better than the toy on the Craig Fergy show.

I could not see spending $150 or more for an ereader, when I already have a laptop. But I did want a more portable way to use the files. This is what I came up with.

Just a thought....

sudo apt-get install xpdf
# or your equivalent.

pdftotext inputfile.pdf outputfile.txt

# Optional: split the text file into smaller portions if you want to.

text2wave < outputfile.txt > file.wav

# test file
