Reset my brothers old linksys router which does actually run dd-wrt. I needed to test wireless on a laptop I have and check out the Chumby. Ended up having to upgrade the driver on the laptop. fortunately it was just an sudo apt-get install (filename). It connected to the router fine. There is a button on the laptop that acts as a hard switch to disable the wireless if you need to go back to land lines. Used the laptop to change some settings on the router. Fortunately the wireless was partitioned from the wired connections.

Finally had a chance to look at the Insignia Infocast aka Chumby. Had it up and running. Downloaded and expanded the firmware for the browser software for the Chumby and fortunately there was nothing to install, but only to copy the files to the root of a usb stick. You just reboot the Chumby with a usb stick with the image and viola you are in business. So now before power up, you have a choice between the Chumby interface and the web interface. With the set up you have one or the other, but not both.

Was up and running with the browser on the chumby. Awesome! With a web server you do not need to worry about installing apps when using the browser image. There are a zillion web apps that you can use from running a business to whatever. if you can code for the web or know someone who can, you will never be lacking. I plan to use it like an ipad. The only negative is you do need a keyboard unless your webapps have an online keyboard.

So far the Chumby has been very responsive. I do need to build a time extending battery backup though. But that can be done for a few bucks plus the cost of batteries. That's right, I heard allegedly you can not change the battery pack on some of the Apple equipment. In any case for home use the Chumby will be superb. I'm tempted to take it to a place where people flourish with the Ipad and use it nonchalantly just to see the looks on their faces when I tell them what I paid for it. Enough about that. Still have to do some security tweaking on it.

Enough rambling for now, so on to other things. Need to get some instructables finished.
