Getting Started with Linux in 24 Hours :)

Posted 04-03-2008 at 09:37 AM by laucian

this one is my first post, i hope it will be helpful.

There is this huge Operating-System-Wars with a very annoying question, "which one is better?". If you visit linux.org you will read there, that Linux is an alternative to Windows. There are guides, tutorials in internet, God knows how many and almost every single one of them is focussed on the same basic mistake. How can i start using Linux? How can i save myself from evil Windows? I am interested to share my opinion about it.

First of all, i don't really believe in this OS-War. There are spesific areas that the developers are concentrating themselves. The very normal home users who are using Firefox,Winamp,Media Player and playing the newest games with their Windows boxes not because they find it better but it is only the option. And the Linux development does not have a strong move about that. Let me give you my example. I have been using Banshee Player of GNOME 2.20 to listen to my music. I had problems that it wasn't able play some of my mp3s thah every other single media player plays without problem and that i was not able to install a lyrics plugin for the player. I was forced to compile the source code of it!! Not everybody is supposed to be a computer expert and compiling source codes. There is simple no "setup.exe" for it.

Well on the other hand, the strategy followed by windows development is; make it easy for everybody. It is annoying for nobody that as default you have to install an extra firewall & anti-virus & anti-spyware and get frustrated of the jumping pop-up windows of these software.

So what i believe is, just use them both. Linux won't give you the flexibility of Windows, you will get crazy installing new software, solving dependencies, getting help, understanding the concepts of the system. And Linux will be mountain to climb and will help you seeing new horizons when you are on top.

If you are curious about how to climb this mountain, just follow my following posts. I am also a climber and would gladly share my experiences on the subject.

PS: Sorry for the english mistakes, i am not a native speaker. any feedback is wellcome.
