resize2fs: RHEL journal error: Operation not permitted While trying to add group #128

While attempting to increase the size of the root file system on one of my RHEL 5 servers, I got this message:

[root@cdi log]# resize2fs /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00

resize2fs 1.39 (29-May-2006)

File system at /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 is mounted on /; on-line resizing required

Performing an on-line re-size of /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 to 5242880 (4k) blocks.

resize2fs: Operation not permitted While trying to add group #128...
