I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it is truly the year of the android. For the last year I have had the one reasonable choice, the glorious G1. I could have gone with the Mytouch, however without the keyboard or any specs to up my geek cred there was no reason to upgrade. To make matters worse the click was a joke. All of this changed with the release of the Droid. Android has truly become a household name and will continue to grow market share and rock the cellular market. This is not going to be a technical article, just me ranting about the state of the union.

If you were to look at a calender at this moment you would see good old fashion Jan the 13th 2010. However if you are like me and get down with China Town and all of their glorious cultural elements such as the Folex watch and the herbal remedies, you would find that its the year of the Metal Tiger. The Metal element gives the Tiger its sharpness in action and speed of thought. Tigers born in the Metal year like to stand out in a crowd. With an inspiring assertiveness and competitive demeanor, they determine their goals and then do anything necessary to achieve them. This good-looking character sometimes suffers from mood swings and temper tantrums. You can say what you will about astrology, but how true this is.

All this being said, I keep trying to find a reason to upgrade. Upon the release of the droid I will be the first to admit that I coveted it. I saw the Google navigation and I wanted it, and I wanted it yesterday ! Here in lies the beauty of the G1 and what I am trying to impart in this article. Within one day of the navigation problem being on the XDA forums there was a simple workaround to get it working on my beloved G1, and again I had no viable reason to squander my paycheck. Within weeks they released it on the market. As far as I am aware, there is nothing that can be done on the newest of the new the baddest of the bad, the Nexus One, that I can not do on my old school G1. With my cyanogenmod up to date I would even say that there are certain elements in my antiquated 1.6 that are handled better than the 2.1 OS. The only reasonable exception to this would be that every text area in Android 2.1 is speech-to-text enabled, However if you cant drive with a beer and a cigarette, while you text message I don't think that you have any place on the road to begin with ! The G1 has inspired my loyalty and that of the open source community. There is even a G1 rap song ! There is a thriving community still not only actively supporting the device but dedicated to making it better.

When Skynet ... er I mean Google becomes sentient will they come down and stamp non-compliant on my forehead in bright cartoony letter ? If not I think I will stick it out with my time honored, tested, and true G1. Come on Google, give me a reason to get frogy and I will be the first to leap.
