ATI -- There is no greater hate

I think that some recent developments are going to prove to be a sad thing for Linux users. (Quick link to the story: http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/03/a...irectx-11-gpu/ )

Sadly, with the focus on DirectX, I doubt that ATI/AMD will be focusing on their Linux drivers enough. This leaves users like myself in a bad situation. We will have no proper 3D acceleration.

After installing a new (read as: new to me) ATI Radeon 9550XL into a computer that I use for low level gaming and some fooling around in Blender, Ubuntu 9.04 will not boot into Gnome with the proprietary driver enabled. Looking into my sources (Google), I found that this is a common problem.

With their focus on the Windows only DirectX, what will be the end result of the Linux driver? Will it be going away?

While I doubt that it will go away, it's still extremely frustrating, and it's a very big hindrance to a more major adoption of Linux on the desktop. New users wanting to switch are going to run into these headaches. Then, they won't want to switch.

Shame on ATI, and shame on the other companies who don't support Linux by including Linux drivers.
