why do we strive?

Posted 03-03-2012 at 02:12 PM by hplc

I was thinking about the technological progress humanity have done, how very fast we went from pure mechanical solutions to the microchip, and the never ending ongoing progress towards better and better, smarter and smarter devices. Iphone, Ipad, bluetooth, wifi, more and more UPNP and AUTO builtin, devices that can make contact with other devices in the name of "user friendlyness"

Todays industrial robots that manufactures our cars, tvs, computers, cloths and whatnot takes orders, not from man, but from another machine, if some metal-cutting robot runs low on raw material it sends an alert to a computer wich in turn tells another robot on rails to go to the storage and go load the first robot mentioned.

So....how far off is Matrix and Terminator?, think hard, those movies were based on the fact that technology came to a point were the computer became selfaware and used that very interoperability we humans designed and used it for its own purpose, what is there to stop them once they turn on their former masters?, pull the plug? well millions of PCs, millions of industrial robots, millions and millions of devices containg processing power beyond imagine just ten years ago, if working togheter using copper net, fiber optic net, satelites, bluetooth, wifi...u name it.....those calculations done by a billion "brains" could fast go from harmless selfawareness to "must defend existence"

Some belive there might be alien species out there, perhaps dangerous ones!?, what about the ones we make?, antibiotic-resistant bacteria is already a living proof of a new species that aint very friendly, so why do we strive to make intelligent hardware even more intelligent?, when it one day may wake up and consider us pests / locusts-swarms?. I dont mind technology, i like it, i love to sit and fiddle around with different OS, but i really dont want to wake up one day, struggle with the coffemachine to convince it to make coffee, go to the computer to read news of the day, just to realize i have to argue with the computer to start the goddamn firefox for me

sounds like someone changed username to flood us again? ))
At your place I would think of dangers of all-open-access that allows humans to take your devices over, not machines which still run only known bytecode. Just load your devices with lightweight and nice code and forget about it. Otherwise, anyway, what can you do if Matrix becomes true? That's right, you'll fight. And not with words on blogs, probably not even in the net So go and have fun living your life.

"sounds like someone changed username to flood us again?"

well this is the one and only nick i ever had on LQ, and these 2 blogs are the 2 blogs i ever have made, if someone has "flooded" it sure wasnt me.

But then again, if someone on the internet believes that nick and that is same IRL person here again "trolling" then what to do?, there is no censorship on the internet, wich means there is no such thing as justice, the freedom of speech is not always a good thing, someone may start a net riot accusing me of being a troll, just as well as i can start a riot accusing someone guilty of rape or pedophilia. Modern computers ability to produce highly trustworthy fake pictures of someone conducting an indecent act is easily made. And what can that innocent victim on those images do?.

Bottomline is, freedom of speech and all other forms of freedom, spoken or written comes with a great responsibility. There were a time when people had to stand up for their acts and sayings.

But not now, today on internet anyone can accuse any other person for just about anything and backup their stories with "look at these pictures, its proof, its proof!"

"how much of this is true?, can it be true?"

I can only pity those who lack the ability to think and reason and approach a subject with a truly critical mind, but then again, who am i to speak in these ways?, after all, i might just be ........a troll.
