Lists, new users, and the thick of it all

One thing that really bugs me, is all of the "top ten" lists on various news sites. How many "top ten" lists do we need for Linux?

I just saw one top ten list that was "The top ten Linux wallpapers" and it should have read "The top ten Gnome wallpapers that have been around since dirt". I realize new users are happy and proud about their new operating system, but we really don't care about what you think are the best wallpapers.

Another point I have, is that Ubuntu is not THE Linux, it is A Linux. Gnome is not the only desktop environment (although I admin Ubuntu does a nice job with it). When I introduce someone to Linux, I always recommend that they start with Ubuntu, but I make clear that Ubuntu is not the be all end all of Linux. I explain to them about package managers, desktop environments, and distributions, and it doesn't take more than a few minutes to cover the basics.

I use KDE and Gnome (KDE moreso), and I see the benefits of both. I don't quite understand Gnome's obsession with Mono either. Why embed such a technology that has the opportunity of such misfortune in the future? I know that it could go any way, and there is this "promise" from Microsoft, but really, do we want to take that chance? Since Linux is about choice, you can decide. I have decided that I do not want to have anything to do with mono. Sure, there are some nice programs based on it, but you have choices, and their are nicer programs not based on it (from what I have found). I just don't trust anything that has the possibility of a corporation such as Microsoft (that is patent sue-happy) suing over and taking it away. Luckily, I use a distribution that allows me to not use mono at all (Gentoo) just by changing a USE flag.

New users, I will help you all I can. In my blog posts it may seem that I am harsh and rude, but really, I am not. I just want to help people, and the situations I point out in my blog posts here are not always the majority.

Hopefully, I will be posting some how-tos soon that will help everyone out. I know I owe the community a lot for all of the help it has given me over the years.
