Another Computer goes Dapper

Posted 04-04-2006 at 11:52 PM by Freemor

Well... Yesterday I upgraded my wife's computer to Dapper (since it is so stable and all) and after some minor fussing about with the flash plugin (seems it and the adblock extension don't get along anymore) she was up and running. She is using an old 850mhz AMD Duron but the speed improvments were still quite evident.. possibly even moreso then on my computer (which is by no means a screamer).

Today while checking things out got both good and bad news the remote control now works on her TV card (saa7134). She is very happy to see that.. unfortunately seems they (not the Ubuntu guys some other "they") have temporarily broken the kernels support for the radio built into her TV card. no biggy didn't use it that much and We are sure that it is being worked on.

I have been checking out "Beagle" (beagled) today. Very nice!! I'm sure it will be of great use to her as she has 200Gig HD with many, many files collected from hither and yon over the years. Although she is very good with directories and sub-directories to keep things organized she still sometimes finds it hard to locate the one file she knows she has somewhere... (don't we all).

The upgrade went very smoothly. Same as I did my own computer but this time I used Synaptic. As I figured it was a bit neater but still needed touching up (OpenOffice keeps getting removed but not updated. no biggie.. just tell it to install it after the update.. but not sure why it got dropped like that).

So far the Dapper experience has been a positive one.. Of course there could be a stumbling block down the road as The Ubuntu crew work on this or that.. but we are both greatly pleased so far.

As a side note here.. just let me make it clear that I'm a techie from way back, and as such I Enjoy the challenges that playing in Alhpa level software sometimes presents. Please, please do not take my happiness with Dapper as an endorsement of the idea of updating your system at this point. I will not have the time or energy to help you fix your system if it dies in the updating process for some reason. Please read all the various warnings, caveats, changelogs, bug reports, etc before deciding to upgrade your main computer. and Please, please, please, don't say I told you it was a good idea to upgrade at this early stage.. because really.. I wouldn't.

I'm writing this blog to give people not comfortable with Alpha releases a peek into my experiences with it and because I know many people are excited about Dapper and finding it hard to wait for the Official release.

joy, peace, and happy hacking
