Linux is not yet a fully ready drop-in replacement for Windows or Mac for most users. But for the things I use a computer for, it has in fact completely replaced Windows. Gaming? Pft. That's what my Playstation is for!

This li'l blog is intended to be just an expression of gratitude to the wonderful "geeks" who have made Linux easy enough for even simple kids like me to use. And to encourage other simple kids like me to try Linux too.

And perhaps along the way, to put some of the "geeky stuff" I've learned from just ordinary use, into words that other non-geeks can understand.

Newbies As Guinea Pigs?

Posted 02-10-2010 at 05:58 AM by dixiedancer

There is no excuse, in my opinion, for putting unstable, experimental beta software as a default in a ready release of a Linux distro that claims to be "beginner-friendly," as Ubuntu has done with Karmic Koala! Both Grub-2 and PulseAudio are still Beta, still unstable. Yet tried-and-proven ALSA is set aside in favor of PulseAudio. At least in Ubuntu and Kubuntu. Thankfully Xubuntu did not simply copy it's older siblings. Karmic Xubuntu has been trouble free because the smart devs on that project were not willing to use beginners as guinea pigs. But shame on its big sisters for throwing away the tried-and-true in favor of more "bling."

That's this simple kid's opinion.

You have an interesting outlook on things. Keep it up and when you begin to unlock the full potential of Linux you'll never want to use anything else.
