Hello. Blog entry number 1

Posted 12-01-2008 at 08:21 AM by ctsiow

Hey all. just thought I should put a blog here to talk about me and my Linux experiences. I was thinking about how long I have been using Linux and I think it must be around 7 years. Started with a Red Hat system at work, in the old days when I was employed instead of self-employed, then I set up a Mandrake system on an old box that was being slung out, the Red Hat system was an "official" machine so no playing with that one! We used Sun machines running Solaris as the main tools, workstations to multi processor servers so it was not too much of a jump to Linux from there. (I think that one of the main problems with getting more people to move onto Linux is it has always been a long way from ms to Linux. This gap has narrowed considerably over the last few years I must say, with Ubuntu leading the way imho.) We had no system admin for the Red Hat box and I seemed to get that job by default. I used the Mandrake system to play and I broke it a few times but no worries as there was nothing on it that was important. So I managed to get a few of my team to take Linux seriously and now some of my ex-colleagues use Linux more than windows, so good on them. Currently I have a Mandriva system setup as a file and webserver with a dual boot xp / opengeu tower and a xp / opensuse 10.3 laptop. Why the difference in distros? Don't know really. I like suse on the laptop running gnome, and Mandriva as a file server is running real sweet; This one is running KDE4.1, I played with 4.0 on the laptop but wasn't happy, 4.1 runs a lot better. The opengeu is running enlightenment, the system boots and is up and running in less that half the time that xp boots. That will definitely stay and there is an upgrade waiting to go on I think, must get round to doing that sometime.
So that is my Linux info, I am self employed as a computer engineer although not working at the moment as I have recently been in hospital and am recovering slowly. Not sure what will be in the next few blogs, I will have to wait and see, this means you will too!
Bye for now.
