Finally gave in and asked the hardware forum.

Posted 01-30-2009 at 11:18 PM by ctroyer

I was hoping to avoid posting in the hardware forum, but as I haven't been making any headway by searching elsewhere, I posted there. From the research I've done, it looks as if the development of the madwifi modules stopped before my kernel came out (2.6.21.5) and there is some detail that prevents it from compiling properly. I've read lots of threads, here and elsewhere, in which people were trying to compile on newer kernels, and still seeing the ath_pci failing to load. Too many of the threads...

Trying to get madwifi to compile

Posted 01-25-2009 at 05:29 PM by ctroyer

Anyone have any luck getting madwifi v0.9.4 to compile? According to the notes at madwifi-project.org, and at sourceforge, the sourceforge files are deprecated and the suggestion is to download the latest from madwifi-project.org.
Cool, but the link on madwifi-project.org - "Click here to Download madwifiv0.9.4!" redirects to - you guessed it - Sourceforge! Yay. Running in circles.
So I downloade it again, untarred and compiled again, but still ath_pci is not found. modprobe...

madwifi-project.org

Posted 01-24-2009 at 10:10 AM by ctroyer

OK, my mistake. The madwifi.org site is the old obsolete one; I read all about their hosting issues before, when I was looking for ndiswrapper alternatives.
At the new site, madwifi-project.org, they have all the new information. Looks to me like the madwifi driver is the one I need to use, since the ath5k driver does not support my AR5005G card yet. Like I said before, I'd rather use the newer ath5k driver - as it is all open source, but I'm no zealot, and I just really want this dang...

Not getting anywhere with MadWifi

Posted 01-23-2009 at 10:00 PM by ctroyer

Downloaded madwifi-0.9.4 from sourceforge - read the README and INSTALL files, did make and make install - but there seems to be no ath_pci module for modprobe to load. Hmmm.

Went to madwifi.org to look for the wiki. Couldn't find it, but did find lots of hints that the sourceforge version of the code is obsolete. So I went to a mirror site for the 'latest' snapshot. That file was madwifi-20060331. Sounds older than madwifi-0.9.4, but what the heck. Tried compiling it, but just got...

New cheap CardBus wireless card arrives

Posted 01-22-2009 at 09:43 PM by ctroyer

The D-Link DWL-G630 that I ordered from BuyDirect Corporation (Found on Amazon ) Arrived. Yay!

I decided to order this card by searching the wireless chipset list at http://linux-wless.passys.nl/ and searching Amazon for vendors who were selling the particular cards with the particular chipset I was seeking. Took some tedious typing into search boxes, but I found several options that I liked, and had I not found this card for $10.00 I would have called the vendors to quiz them about...
