Gone back to Windows again
Seems like a long time ago I said I would return to Windows, Jan 2010 to be closer.
Well, it didn't last long back then but I have gone back to Windows again.
This time it looks like I'm staying with Windows after over 10 years of only Linux. I was a huge advocate for Linux and spouted the message a'high. I initially learned a lot here at LXQ to get over the hurdles that are placed on everything Linux.
Here are my reasons:
My graphics pad would never work consistently. I spent a lot, no, a huge amount of time trying to make it work. It worked, it got broke, again and again with OS updates and maybe some fiddling. It never, ever worked the way intended. No features, just the stylus, when it did work. I ended up smashing it with a hammer because I WANTED TO STAY WITH LINUX! I bought a new Wacom expecting it to work well with Linux. It didn't. It's the manufacturers fault for not supporting Linux. THIS WILL NOT CHANGE, EVER.
I want to work with graphics and have two monitors. It is still a PITA to get screens working the way I want with main screen on the right and second on left. Too much fiddling required.
I have always used KDE. I have used Gnome aplenty too but the change over period from V3 to V4 was a "don't care about users" time. Useless dialogs, unimplemented features went on for years. There is still lots of useless, unfinished stuff there. Dumbing down the UI is not going forward. And now they will do the same to V5. I won't a party to that. No, not at all thank you very much.
Kubuntu is still on my disk but windows is first boot option now. It's been two weeks, I booted back just to move some files onto NTFS and have not used it as such. I even got VMware and have a VM of Mint but don't really need it.
Now ALL my hardware works as it's supposed to with little or no fiddling. Winamp covers audio very well, better than the 3 programs I had to use to do the same stuff. My Pad is awesome. I have buttons that work. The monitors are too easy to setup, well no setup, just use it. And many more.
Windows as of 7 is very good now, much better than I expected. I might even buy it although I don't have to.
If ever Linux can get into hardware certification with the manufactures maybe that might help. I can't see it happening though. The Windows megasaur is unstoppable because of secret agreements to only support windows and get certification. I now laugh very loudly when I hear about the rise of the "Linux Desktop" it aint gonna happen.

Sorry lumak, you must have missed the part where I said I used Linux only for over ten years. Blissful ignorance would be for one who has not seen the virtues of Linux. I know, I was like you too.
After another trouble free week, I have no viruses or spyware as I know how to use a PC and a network. I don't feel the urge to return.Posted 08-18-2011 at 05:57 PM by maxie

The way I see it, if you gave it an honest try (and 10 years is a bit past "honest try" heh), and it didn't match what you wanted, more power to you in finding what suits your needs. I left Linux too (albeit in a drastically different path...I ended up migrating to OpenBSD), so I know where you're coming from. Linux isn't a "one-size fits all" OS, and it *shouldn't* be...but that's an entirely different story.

I left Microsoft products because there were no drivers that I needed with MSWindows. Linux did have what I needed. Been with linux since the 1990's. 1999 was probably the year of the linux desktop for me. There is so much open software for linux that Mswindows can not compete. We are going to web based services anyway, so now the platform is less of an issue. The pad maker is the issue, not linux. Put credit where credit is due.
