Slackware-13.1-Hacks-Opera Hardening

Posted 02-16-2011 at 03:42 PM by arniekat

Opera Web Browser Hardening

These are the settings I use on Opera, however you may go more stricter or looser with your security settings depending on your needs.

The current version available from SlackBuilds.org is Opera-11.01. After compiling and installing Opera, run the application and do the following:

Click Menu (Upper Left-Hand Corner) > Settings > Preferences OR CTRL+F12

General Tab > Startup "Start with a Home Page"
General Tab > Home Page "Enter your favorite home page"
I change it from "Continue from last time" since this setting will save the last webpage you visited. I prefer to start from scratch on my own Home Page.

Forms > Enable Password Manager UNCHECK
Forms > Auto-Fill Forms NO INFORMATION

Advanced > Content > JavaScript Options > Allow Resizing Of Windows UNCHECK
Advanced > Content > JavaScript Options > Allow Moving Of Windows UNCHECK
Advanced > Content > JavaScript Options > Allow Script To Hide Address Bar UNCHECK
This keeps bad websites from using JavaScript to create Windows that are impossible to get rid of.

Advanced > History > Remember visited addresses for history and autocompletion 0
Advanced > History > Hit the CLEAR button to clean-out the History
Advanced > History > Remember content on visited pages UNCHECK
Advanced > History > Disk Cache > Empty On Exit CHECK
Advanced > History > Hit the EMPTY NOW button to clean out the disk cache

Advanced > Cookies > Never accept cookies CHECK
Advanced > Cookies > Click the Manage Cookies button and delete any cookies that are there

When you are on a website that requires cookies, you will get a message:
Cookies must be enabled to message you correctly! Enable Cookies and reload the page. If you need to allow cookies, then change the settings to:

Advanced > Cookies > Accept cookies only from the site I visit CHECK
Advanced > Cookies > Ask me before accepting cookies CHECK

Now, when you visit a webpage that needs to use cookies, you will get a dialog box asking you whether to Accept or Refuse cookies. Two additional options are:
Force Deletion When Exiting Opera
Remember my choice for all cookies for this domain CHECK

Advanced > Security > Auto-update > Do not check for updates
Since Opera is compiled with a SlackBuild manually, I end up checking manually for a new Opera version.

Advanced > Network > Enable Geolocation UNCHECK
This keeps websites from finding out your location.

Hit OK when you are done.

Here is how you Delete Private Data in Opera:

Click Menu (Upper Left-Hand Corner) > Settings > Delete Private Data

Delete Session Cookies CHECK
Delete All Cookies CHECK (Note-Will not delete cookies you have saved!)
Delete Password Protected Pages And Data CHECK
Delete Entire Cache CHECK
Clear History Of Visited Pages CHECK
Clear History Of Downloads CHECK
Clear Bookmark Visted Time CHECK
Clear All Email Account Passwords CHECK
Clear Password Manager CHECK
Delete Persistent Storage CHECK
Close All Tabs CHECK

When I need anonymous browsing I use `opera -private`. Or `firerox -private`. And again, nothing to do with slackware. I don't know why are you appending this to every post.
Still, settings for opera you provided are acceptable.
