Notes regarding whatever is catching my interest, which is normally technology, more often than not dealing with virtualization or performance testing. Of course in all likelihood, anything useful I might have to say will get buried in the useless things I find funny or irritating and since it's a blog I have no shame about inflicting any of that on you.

No Root For Coders

I was approached by a Java developer who wanted to put a set of python scripts on one of the instances I'm responsible for. I asked for the script (it's just python) and he decided that he'd just pressure a Jr. Admin into it instead. So the moron (my Junior Admin) did as he was told because he didn't want to fight with Management and the Dev team so he loaded the scripts and put pointers into /etc/rc3 blind (he has no python skills), and he did it all with no reboot because the Jprogger told him it didn't need one.
Unsurprisingly, it failed rather spectacularly on a patching reboot and required emergency intervention from the Enterprise security staff to recover the instance. The Junior guy is toast, he was gone as of the day I made a root cause determination and his name was all over the the work order.
The Jprogger has slunk off mumbling about how I'm not a "team player", which stopped when I pointed out that's good, because he tosses his "teammates" under the bus, just ask our ex-junior guy. The problem I've got with this whole thing is the root cause was something almost any admin would have pointed out the moment he'd reviewed the scripts however the jprogger doesn't know enough about the environment to realize he's sticking a loaded gun in somebodies mouth.
So just a note, coders. You may be the craptastic java whatever on the planet but on the instances, it's not actually about who writes the cleanest code. It's about who's code works in the environment and if you're not knowledgeable about the environment then stay the hell in your own lane because the Admins end up taking responsibility for the crap you don't know.
One bright note, I'm going to get the MBA we all work for fired for backing the Jprogger over the Engineer. He apparently studied java programming in college before deciding it was easier to sell his soul but even that short term exposure was sufficient to unhinge his mind. He and my junior guy can probably talk that out while they're waiting on the unemployment line.

Damn, reminds me of the Warden in the prison I worked at, as the Head of fixing things.

He'd assign me hard core convicts as a work crew. To assist me .
Then call me to task for them building and fixing tattoo
guns during working hours. On the sly. At least I made sure nobody died over stolen screw drivers.

When I left. Mind you. The company I worked for was about as principled as Donald Trump. Human Resources admin and the Assistant Warden were told to follow me
out the door. The warden was assigned to another facility. Seems that corporate home office was a little upset with my leaving. Seeing I kept the place running on the cheap.

I don't miss that job one bit.

Now you have me curious on how

How all that turned out. I don't expect to see him fired. The higher up the food chain. The more they don't want to drain the fish tank. Costs too much for new fish. Kinda like guppies vs a Lion fish.

No, he got dumped. He was offered up as the second human sacrifice in that little imbroglio. The home office thought "One head good, two heads gooder" I suppose. In retrospect, not really something I should celebrate.
This is a really old post, Rocket, and not one I'm especially proud of, I just hammered it out one night because I was pissed at the stupidity of what was going on around me.
Unfortunately, I do not have a craftsman weed-whacker on steriods to work out my frustrations on and I also lack that tremendous positive attitude you display, I just get pissed and wish disaster on my fellow man (which occasionally comes to pass, so I should cut it out).
    Thanks for the comment

    Thanks for the update.
My folks taught me to not sweat the small stuff.
They were kids in a concentration camp in WW2.

That "A bird never feels sorry for itself" type of mentality. I've seen a lot of injustice in my life
time. I do get/have dark thoughts at times.

But then. It hit's me I wanna keep a 12 year old mentality. Which brushes the dark thought away.
I look good and am fit for a old man because of this.

At least it works for me. Don't let the world rule your inner universe. Hard to do I know. But it is do able.
