Root your G1 and add cyanogenmod

Posted 10-06-2009 at 11:05 AM by jkzfixme

So last year I posted a blog about why my wife should let me spend our rent money on an android dev phone. Well as it turned out I ended up waiting a few months for my sprint contract to be up and jumped ship to Tmobile. Android is simply the best thing since sliced bread, it has everything I could need and then some. That being said there are multiple reasons why I rooted it. For one you can run full distro's, I tried out Debian and it was awesome. There are other interesting things to do such as turning your phone into a wireless router that provides internet access as shown in this xda post. However the main reason I did it was so that you can install and access application on your sdcard. In this regards I could not only try before I buy , but also back everything up in the event of catastrophic failure, drunken jacuzzi, or any other debauchery that ensues. The Cyanogenmod also adds some really neat features like 5 desktops and some really nice apps installed by default. However these apps recently got the gentleman modding the roms a cease and desist from Google. Now I am not going to debate the issue as to why Google felt the bad press was necessary, however I will tell you where to get the modified roms. Torrent sites seem to be the only option out there until the project proceeds, by removing the google proprietary crap, so you can download it from the marketplace yourself.

The cyanogenmod I had luck with was the CyanogenMod Stable 4.0.4 , the 4 1 11 1 did not work for whatever reason.

Now before we get started I would like to quote cyanogenmod.com

While this build is heavily optimized, it is also capable of pushing your G1 much harder. I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards, thermonuclear war, or the current economic crisis. Please do some research if you have any concerns about features included in this ROM before flashing it! YOU are choosing to make these modificiations, and if you point the finger at me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you.
The first thing we are going to do is proceed to downgrade the phones rom, to version RC29 so you can exploit a security hole that existed in an early version of Android.

I. mount your android phone to your pc and format the sdcard to Fat32. at this point you will also need to rename the volume label to
Quote:
sdcard
II. Download this file extract and copy the DREAMIMG.nbh file to the sdcard.

III. Turn the power off on the phone.

IV. While turning the phone back on hold the power and the camera button this will bring you to bootloader mode.

V. You should see a grey screen now , if you see a color spectrum , make sure that you have properly formatted the sdcard to fat32 as well as added the file DREAMIMG.nbh to the root dir on the sdcard.

VI. As per the on-screen instructions, press the Power button to start the upgrade procedure. DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO INTERRUPT THIS PROCESS OR YOU WILL END UP WITH A BRICK !

VII. After it is finished, restart your phone and you will be at RC29.

VIII. Now you need to download recovery.img and HardSPL and put them in the root dir of the sdcard. Note that this time you do not unzip the file.

IX. Now this is where the exploit comes in , basically on this version of android everything typed in went into a terminal running in the background. After your phone starts up,
Quote:
hit the enter key twice
, type
Quote:
telnetd
and then
Quote:
press enter
. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don't worry. Just type it.)

X. Download connectbot or any other comparable telnet program from the market and telnet to localhost , you should then get a # prompt.

XI. Type the following into Telnet, followed by the enter key.

Quote:
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
Quote:
cd sdcard
Quote:
flash_image recovery recovery.img
Quote:
cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img
XII. shutdown phone and restart in recovery mode by holding home and pressing power until you feel the buzz. You will now enter recovery mode.

XIII. press Alt-L to show the menu and then Alt-S to update HardSPL so you can install updated roms of your choice. After the update is complete, hold Home and press Back to restart.

XIV. At this point you can either go the cyanogenmod way as I have or download an updated dev romhere is a list.

XV. Either way you go, you need to remove everything else on the sdcard, then download the rom to it. Now you need to rename the file to update.zip

XVI. Now you need to update the phone to that rom by turning the phone off, pressing home and power, Alt-S to update, then hold home and press back to restart.

XVII. If all went well it should take a couple minutes then boot up to cyanogenmod.

As always any questions or comments feel free to leave and I will do my best to answer.

Regards,

  1. Old Comment
Cyanogenmod.com came up with its own documentation wiki, so no point in updating this one
