...a rambling aside to life in general.

Inspiron Mini 9 is in the he-ouse.

Posted 12-17-2008 at 10:31 AM by PresGas

Okay, so I got the machine in late yesterday and this morn, I immediately put in Xubuntu 8.10 alternative cd so that I could get the encrypted private directory without much hassle. Also, I kinda wanted the surprise of seeing what I would boot up to and what would be available. I am now writing this entry from it.

Here is the lshw output (removed USB stuff:

Looks like the broadcom chip in 8.10 is using the wl driver family, but jockey will offer loading of the Broadcom SDA wireless driver. This default driver gets me on an open G WAP and looks like if offers the appropriate dialogs for WPA 2 enterprise, but I have a B WAP at home...so we will see how that works tonight!

The display seems to be at 800x600 *shiver* and I am not able to use xfce-s display control panel to increase that resolution. Time to dive into some googleing and fancy forum searching.

I will write more as I discover it.

    You should be able to do 1024x600. At least mine does with Ubuntu 8.10.

    Encrypted private directory? Are you talking about the Dell partition?

    I'm guessing these are the same drivers. The wl is Broadcom's proprietary Linux driver. In theory the b43 driver should work, but my experience with that one is iffy.

    @Hangdog42

    Yeah, I have discovered most of this, and I was lying about the resolution...'cause it was 1024x600.

    I was talking about the encrypted private directory feature in 8.10:
    Finally, you are right, but something got borked somewhere and jockey still offered those drivers to me. I figured it out when I had them deactivated and had no wireless at all.

    Thanks for the link to the encrypted directory. I had no idea something like that was built into Ubuntu.
