why is it that some distros seem to have everything you want, like plugins and flash, and other distros dont. I find that even some later distros dont have these extras already programed in and ready to use. We are not all geeks and some of us are still struggling to download and get packages up and running.I have just this week installed Suse 11 onto my computer.Have had lots of crashes since installing this distro. I have also dowloaded codecs for totem, and it still is giving me trouble, and not working yet. With all the trouble I seem to have with most distros I sometimes wonder why I ever left Windows. and yet I honestly do like linux far better. I have had a computer from when the first pc came available, and I am certainly no newbie as far as computers go. But linux is still baffling me at times. i have all the linux books for almost every distro. I follow there instructions and still most of the time they dont work. I seem to get lots of ERRORS, this failed and that failed, codecs unavailable, and yet I had the same codecs working fine on an earlier distrobution of the same kind. has anyone else had all this bother, I just can't be the only one.

Many linux distros attempt to be truly free. This is why you may find MP3, encoded dvd playback, and many other common tasks missing. Sometimes its not a matter of "is the program free of proprietary source code?". It is more a matter of "is that file format 'open?'" Many of the linux distros that you can only purchase because there is no free version has proprietary things that they paid for the right to use. At least this is what I have gathered... I could be wrong.

I think that in some countries it is OK to load say a codec but not OK in other. by not having such things included you can d/l the distro with no worries in those countries but still be able to add to your system in the countries you are allowed. If you see what I mean..
