After greedily eyeing ThinkPads for a time (I get a decent discount on some models at work), I veered off in a different direction, did some more research and bought myself one o' those netbook thangs.
It is very cute. It's an Asus 1000HE. Asus has ceased to ship these things with Linux, so this has the mephitic Windows XP on it. No! The lousy! It burns!
My initial plan is to get Slackware loaded onto the new machine (whether using Slackeee or some other method is as yet undetermined), but keep XP around until I have everything working under Slack. It should be a fun project and, in order to keep from repeating stupid mistakes (a habit of mine) I'm going to keep a written log of my activity. And when it is complete, I will post a precis of it here, or in the forums, so others may benefit (if it winds up being useful).
