a. Salix LXDE 13.1.2 27 December 2010
b. Suse KDE 4.6 11.4M5 26 December 2010
c. Puppy Wary 5.0 29 December 2010
d. PCLinuxOS LXDE 2010.12 23 December 2010
Reminder of the task used in this testing algorithm:
Internet Radio Station, presupposes an operating system which permits the user to treat his computer like an old-fashioned radio--easy to control, easy to operate.
The "installation time" corresponds, uniquely, compared with other benchmarking suites, to the time from inserting the cdrom, then depressing the reset button, until music is heard from all three streaming audio formats:
mp3
ogg
aac+
(Please note, that this time is considerably longer than the conventional "installation time", for most distros, especially those which do not present the user with streaming audio reception capability "out of the box". The de facto standard for this task is Crunchbang, which is both fastest to install/execute, and most reliable, in my experience. Puppy Linux and PCLinuxOS have also, both, been very productive, in my experience.)
Some versions of Linux do well, for one or two of the three formats, but choke on playing all three formats. A good example of this is Unity 64, which refused to play aac+ streams.
The "boot time", is the time, (after installation is complete, including any recommended downloads "for security updates", or whatever,), after the automatic login for the user has been accomplished, as if operating an old fashioned radio, where one simply turns a knob to power up the radio, and hears music, without any need for all of the usual Linux login nonsense.
In this case, "boot time" corresponds not to the sound of music, but to the ability to click on an icon, in order to hear music.
"Browser time", is the time required, after the user clicks on the browser icon, to visualize this web site:
http://www.listenlive.eu/classical.html
"Off time" is the time required for the computer to power off, after clicking on the appropriate icon to exit.
All of these times, below, are in seconds, except installation, in minutes.
Computers: C4 = Age: 11 years, PIII, 1.13 GHz, 1.0 GB RAM, GIPS = 2.6
C8 = Age: 5 years, PIV D, 3.2 GHz, 1.0 GB DDR-2, GIPS = 14.0
