This blog is devoted to nonconstructive criticism, bashing, and other things that, being neither answers nor questions, are evidently unwelcome anywhere else in Linux Questions.

Linux - by kids and for kids. The big thing.

Posted 03-14-2009 at 07:55 PM by AGer (Void cries or bashing time)

I upgraded to KDE 4.2.1 and XFCE 4.6 in Slackware current. KDE got some fixes (as promised) and XFCE got some polish (all by surprise). The net result is that I spent almost a whole day in a vicious circle making configuration changes to KDE, switching to XFCE, making configuration changes there, and going back to KDE until I was reasonably sure that at this time I like XFCE better. Meanwhile I got errors that are a good reason to write what I always wanted to cry about.

In order...

KDE 4.2 is still below beta quality

Posted 01-31-2009 at 04:51 PM by AGer (Void cries or bashing time)

KDE 4.2 is still an alpha quality code. Code reaches beta quality when testers are required to find bugs. Anything with evident bugs is an alpha regardless of what it can do.

Since Slackware current testing readme tells us that KDE 4 will be probably merged into the main tree soon, I decided that it is time to check it out. In less than an hour I experienced the following immediately evident bugs:

My road to bashing

Posted 01-20-2009 at 02:08 PM by AGer (Void cries or bashing time)

At least one person have read the "Linux nowhere" series in my blog and got interested in the context of that bashing. So, I decided to explain it here. Personally, I like case studies, so let it be another one.

My first distro was ALT Linux, which was very close to Mandrake at the time when I had Pentium Pro 150 at home. I looked at Linux mainly due to media hype and found out that the "super stable Linux" does not exist. If some buggy program hangs X, what fun...

Why Desktop Linux is nowhere, part 4

Posted 01-19-2009 at 02:38 PM by AGer (Void cries or bashing time)

In Part 3 I cried over Linux soft skills. In order to finally loose any hope that improving what is mentioned in parts 2 and 3 may help Desktop Linux, let us notice that a good Windows style desktop is incompatible with Linux by design. This is the last part on Desktop Linux being nowhere, so the conclusion is included.

System configuration is done in *nix in the same manner through scripts and configuration files for 20+ years. This alone proofs that 1) script and configuration...

Why Desktop Linux is nowhere, part 3

In Part 2 I cried over software support in Linux. Now it is time to bash Linux soft skills.

Linux is nowhere communicating. The media presents it like Windows, only free and better. People start to feel themselves paying customers to Linux Inc. and get frustrated immediately.

Even worse, vendors start to think the same. I do not recall what exactly I was installing, but it was funny. A "run" file did it best to install itself and failed with some complaints....
