Pimping my fluxbox

Posted 08-27-2011 at 04:02 AM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

Fluxbox is my favourite windowmanager for a number of reasons, but its default looks are not one of them. The included styles are mostly horrible and the default menu system in the Debian build has its problems.

I know of two decent sources of fluxbox themes:
Unfortunately both sources are dated - it seems the fad of creating themes for window-managers ended a few years ago. Nevertheless...

In praise of ALSA and alsaequal

After a long overdue apt-get upgrade, I am now the happy owner of one more volume slider in alsamixer: headphone.

On a related note, 'alsaequal', a graphic equaliser for ALSA is a really under appreciated tool. I have set it to my default alsa device through .asoundrc:

Code:
ctl.equal {
        type equal;
}

pcm.plugequal {
        type equal;
        # Modify the line below if you don't
        # want to use sound card

This guide is in direct response to http://kpweb.homelinux.org/blog/index.php?id=17 - a guide that uses a rather roundabout and un-hacker like way to install Linux onto a USB stick using a virtual machine.

How to Install Debian onto a USB stick

Requirements

You will need the following:
  • A USB stick ( preferably larger than 1 GB )
  • A working Debian system
  • Root privileges on such a system
  • Time
  • An internet connection

Regarding the American Patent Regime

From the page:

Why would a company rent an office in a tiny town in East Texas, put a nameplate on the door, and leave it completely empty for a year? The answer involves a controversial billionaire physicist in Seattle, a 40 pound cookbook, and a war waging right now, all across the software and tech industries.

When Windows Update kills nostalgia

Posted 07-23-2011 at 05:25 AM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

Today I decided to take a look at my old Pentium 4 box back from the days before I knew of Linux. It has been sitting unused for years, and lately I have come across the desire to setup a torrent box. Before wiping Windows XP off it, I decided to have a look at what it still had.

After starting it up I realised that I had forgotten my login credentials many years ago. To change them I would have to reboot and start the computer off one of my old CDs containing ntpasswd. Unfortunately...
