Lmgtfy

Posted 06-20-2010 at 07:30 PM by 2ck

Every once in a while I read a post that is nothing more than a google search url with the thread title entered as the query. That bothers me.

I know that there are several very experienced posters on these forums who are understandably irked when inane questions pop up. It is tempting to admonish the askers, or patronise their lack of resourcefulness. However, doing so demonstrates an attitude of, at best, carelessness regarding the thought behind the question being asked.

It is natural to ask a question of real people first. A human mind provides a deft filter to the hundreds of sources that are available. When I ask a question of a person, it is because I value his ability to discern, rather than compute, the usefulness of some information. Compared to a book, or even a search engine, a professional is frequently the better resource.

More practically, posting to a thread only bumps it up higher; ignore it and it'll go away.

You make a valid point! Maybe it'd be better to post a link to this Rather than a condescending lmgtfy...
