HOW-TO: Simple GRUB2 NFSroot (Debian 8 Jessie)

Updated Today at 02:55 AM by IsaacKuo

Sometimes you just want to boot with GRUB2 and /boot on a local drive (hard drive or USB drive), but with root on an nfs share. Other tutorials will show you how to set this up with full blown PXE network booting. This How-To shows you how to set this up with just an nfs server. Compared to a full blown PXE netboot setup:

1) Server setup is simpler. Grub nfsroot only requires an nfs server. You do NOT need a tftp server, nor do you need a customized DHCP server.

PERC H800 in non-Dell PowerEdge system

Posted 08-22-2016 at 10:31 AM by MensaWater

We had a PERC H800 MegaRaid adapter in one of our Dell PowerEdge R910 systems. We had a Dell MD1220 array attached to that.

We bought a new SuperMicro based system and initially put the PERC H800 in this server in the top slot of the middle riser. It was dead as a door nail there. Original documentation for the PERC H800 indicated it only worked in certain Dell PowerEdge models so I didn't know if it should work in this new system.

Updated 08-22-2016 at 09:36 AM by exton (More INFO)

My newest Puppy Linux derivative is built from LxPup with the LXDE Desktop environment. (Why reinvent the wheel...). I have added Google Chrome (for Netflix), Gimp, VLC, Emacs and some development tools. If you want more you can download and load (Menu >> Setup >> SFS-Load-on-the-fly) devx_PuppEX_2016.sfs. I have compiled a new kernel – 4.7.1-x86-pae-puppex. Kernel 4.7.1 is the second lastest stable kernel available from Kernel.org as of 160822. PAE (Physical Address Extension) increases...

Emacs rectangle search/replace

Posted 08-21-2016 at 07:43 PM by flshope

I use Emacs to write code occasionally, mostly Fortran. A common thing I need to do is search and replace everywhere in a region confined to a rectangle within the text. An example is altering an existing code from Fortran 77 format to Fortran 90, specifically changing all of the Cs in column one (indicating comments) to !s. In Emacs terminology, this is a rectangle of width 1 character and as high as the number of lines in the code.

I have had difficulty figuring out how to do this...

August 21 & it's only 58 in the morning

Hi,

Cold front coming through has cooled down the area for a deserved relief from the 3 digit heat. Nice out! I think that I will wait a few hours to let the dew dry off then play a round of golf today. I can not mow until the lawn dries out since I bag my clippings.

I miss being on the farm but I do like the luxury of my work load being a lot less these days. Sure, I would be baling hay for the horse and storing for the winter feed. Keeps you fit but does wear on you...
