Engineering Boredom

Posted Yesterday at 11:55 AM by rocket357 (Musings on technology, philosophy, and life in the corporate world)

In the past few months, I've encountered a dramatic shift in interests. Sure, I'm still interested in coding, philosophy, and Unix, but I've appended a new interest to the end of the list, and this one has started trumping my other interests.

The interest is in electronics. I'm not sure 1) how I suddenly got interested in electronics or 2) how I never noticed electronics before! I've gone from the quiet "coder zen" type of desk (i.e. disorganized, but in an "organized"...

Lubuntu conky and compton

Posted 07-20-2014 at 09:13 PM by t1nm@n (Tux and Me)
Updated Yesterday at 12:00 AM by t1nm@n (To add category)

Getting a good desktop with effects like shadows and stuff is the challenge here. After some fiddling around (conky doesnot play well with compton), I was able to get a working setup.

1. Installing compton
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:richardgv/compton
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install compton
2. Open /home/<user>/.config/compton.conf, create one if it doesnot exist. Put these in
Code:
# Shadow
shadow = true;			# Enabled

Datashack Stirrings

Posted 07-20-2014 at 08:54 AM by ttk (Unpopular Positions: One Geek's Take)

One of my ongoing projects, for the purpose of facilitating other projects, is the conversion of our wellhouse to a "datashack" and light workshop. The goal is to run various computers in it without introducing undue noise or heat to the main house.

It's been a while in the coming, but it's coming. Yesterday marked two big steps: I moved my computer cabinet from the garage (where I basically never got to run the systems mounted in it) to the wellhouse, and I installed...

A clock as the header of Openbox' root menu

Posted 07-15-2014 at 04:15 PM by the dsc (linux-related notes)
Updated 07-16-2014 at 06:35 PM by the dsc (grammar?)

If you want a clock instead of the typical "openbox"-labeled separator at the top of the root menu. The way to do that isn't the most nice and convenient way imaginable, though. Essentially you have the root menu as a pipe menu.

The executed script is just a sed one liner:

Code:
 sed "s|INSERT-CLOCK-HERE|$(date +'%-H:%M')|" $HOME/.config/openbox/menu-sed.xml
This a "24 hour" clock format, without leading zeros,...

Bash/command line - minor variable "editing" without sed

Posted 07-14-2014 at 12:38 AM by the dsc (linux-related notes)
Updated 07-14-2014 at 03:02 PM by the dsc

Code:
$ a=lilolal ; echo ${a/lal/uuu}
lilouuu
To move files "copied" on clipboard (Konqueror/perhaps dolphin) to the place you're on a terminal, without navigating/browsing the folders on the file manager, one can use:

xsel -b | while read f ; do mv -i "${f#*file://}" ./ ; done

As "copied" files on Konqueror are registered on the clipboard as a list with "file://" preceding the path. Perhaps could be aliased...
