Gaming in Linux; slackware 13.37

Posted 08-17-2011 at 11:23 AM by linuxpokernut

Back in 2008, I started playing Eve Online. Its one hell of a game, some call it "spreadsheets online" because you wind up needing a spreadsheet to play. It's the worlds largest single shard game server. And back in December of '08, it had a linux client.

It was not a true stand alone client, but it was a Cedega crossover. When you installed it it installed the Cedega engine with just what you need to play. Back then the game had 2 graphics options, "classic" and...

WoW Vs. Guild Wars in Slackware 12.2

Posted 07-27-2009 at 04:38 PM by linuxpokernut

I had been waiting for a hardware upgrade, and finally got one. Upgraded from a single core Sempron 3600+ to a dual core 4000 something. And a 400gb hard drive for some media and games. I had been running Kubuntu 9.04 64 bit, and it was really nice, KDE 4.0 is awesome.

So I downloaded slackware 12.2 and installed it. Did a full install with no remorse for hdd space. Got to the desktop and the first thing I did was grab wine 1.21. They are up to 1.26 already but .22 and .23 were giving...

Video games in Slackware

Posted 11-30-2008 at 03:34 PM by linuxpokernut

First I had to get the nvidia drivers for my card. I was rather amazed that there was a Slackware package and that I did not have to compile from source. That made life a lot easier, or perhaps just this task a lot quicker. Either way it was no problem getting the package. Installing it was a bit trickier than your average Windows or Ubuntu install, but it was't terribly complicated either. All i had to do is quit my x session and log in as root. The install was menu based rather than text so it...

Happy Thanksgiving!

Posted 11-27-2008 at 03:36 PM by linuxpokernut

Yes Happy Thanksgiving, even to M$ users. I just had one thought before going to Turkey dinner at my Moms:

How many people said/will say they are thankful for open source at the dinner blessings tonite?

Does that seem weird to you? I dont know what to make of it. Sounds a bit 'nerdy' to be talking about at the dinner table, but if you think about it it makes sense. People donating time and effort to create free software and more people donating more time to teach new...

A new Slackware users first impressions

Posted 11-26-2008 at 05:42 AM by linuxpokernut

I recently installed Slackware 12.1 on my machine and I would like to share my first impressions. Ill have to share my past experience with *nix a bit here.

Unix/Unix shell at work in a factory.
Fedora 4, 5, 7, 8
Ubuntu/Kubuntu 7.04 and on
Slax 4+ (popcorn is my favorite poket OS.), knoppix 4+, Live Ubuntu, Gentoo live.

The first task was making my machine dual bootable. I wanted to keep Slackware "invisible" to my wife. She supports me...
