Playing with Little Distros
Yep, I tried DSL once more and for me it is NOT the right one. I agree that Puppy is the best, at least for a small distro! I would like to figure out Ubuntu networking and give it a good try, but so far haven't done it.Posted Yesterday at 08:01 PM by SrDorothy

upgrade ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10
Ok This is it! I am now ready to upgrade. all files etc backed up twice just in case. Guess what? I choose Upgrade Now, all appears to start correctly then before it proceeds I get the message:
# failed to lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock
check your internet connection and try again.
the net appears to be working fine. Could TOR be causing this?
Strange 'coz when I was installing something else earlier I had the same message. I don't know what you all think, but it would be nice if linux could explain it's errors better but then again I can't complain as Linux is turning out to be one of the better OS around. Any thoughts on this? Oh by the way, I have also downloaded and burnt a CD with 9.10 on it as an ISO as a last resort.

bash shell script to use getopts with gnu style long positional parameters
The eval is there because parameters (like long file names with spaces) will get expanded to multiple parameters. I can add quotes around the parameters to "group" them again, but I need the eval to get 'set' to accept the quoted arguments.Quote:

Been using LQ for a while, but never needed to post a question yet...
I would personally love it if the reason was that he was posting from the deathstar and did not want Lord Vader to find out he supported Linux (as Vader was obviously a MAC user.)Posted 11-14-2009 at 02:26 PM by lewc

Microsoft Windows 7. My love of IT is back
Like it or loathe it M$ is always going to be there, and I for one am glad because even if Linux became stagnant we could look at the competitors and say "ooh shiny shiny" and sooner or later we would be back to innovating.
Personally I was using Linux before I sat my GCSE's so like it or LAMP it (so sad i think thats funny) it's here to stay. I was fed up when XP first came out and would not use it until SP2 (you know when m$ stopped supporting 2000), I now use vista on this laptop I'm on now (it was pre-installed and since the Service Pack it's not all that bad) and I'm sure in 3 or 4 years time I will move onto windows 7.
I'm not but I suspect your are a new software evangelist, not happy with what you have but curious to what you could have and willing to risk a stable system working well for an upgrade with shiny whistles and bells on.
Vista, 7 and "dilithium naquita infused photon accelerator"(anticipation of new windows crappy futuristic name) will all come out, dissapoint someone in some way, who will flame on at you for your forward thinking and willingness to risk. It will push people towards an alternative and some people will like what they find and some will go back to M$ because it's familiar and thats fine, as long as your happy doing what you do thats all that matters
keep chasing your dream of the perfect windows, I hope you find it. I also hope they don't discontinue support for it and make you buy a new one (like they did to me with 2000 *sighs) but even if they do I'm sure you'll find a new toy to excite you just as muchPosted 11-14-2009 at 02:21 PM by lewc

Linux is a lost cause!
This is a very smart comment and one I fully support, I have a thread on the forums in general on free software and it's implications for linux, perhaps you would be interested in contributing such eloquence to that discussion
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...system-768670/
thanks in advance and well done on this response again.
And now for my response, I'm not sure who promised you this and I understand your dissapointment at Linux's state at the moment I recently compared it to a friend of mine as a giant fractals experiment however I was only joking, it seems like it's coming apart at the seems like some kind of fork bomb with new distro's that are barely different springing out of the woodwork all the time. It does however surprise me that this is happening in the world all around us and not just with Linux. If we are really going to blame anyone it is ourselves as we are the creators of Linux, the stewards to which it's fate has been entrusted and it is probably due to our own errors that Linux has not been pushed.
You ask in your post where is the small business running Linux alone, well where is the small business running windows alone? I am an IT consultant and as such peddle whatever is appropriate and works out most financially sound for businesses and I can tell you I have set up entire web-servers and development environments and presented business owners with dazzling live environments because of the power of Linux. This may not always happen and may not always be a 100% linux system but I can honestly say it is better than nothing, the businesses are pleased and if that pattern continues Linux will be on course to take up it's share of the desktop and server marketplace.
Also you should ask yourself when the internet is run on SUN and IBM boxes and systems that do not run Linux and definately do not run Windows what is the true picture of computing as a whole, it is certainly not as bleak as the M$ pushers would have you believe.
Keep your chin up, Linux may not get there today or tomorrow but as long as it's around we can check back and contribute in any small way we will eventually have the sum of our efforts backPosted 11-14-2009 at 02:05 PM by lewc

Linux is a lost cause!
I don't recall Linux making any promises (to anyone). I understand however that this is not what you meant.
To me, the promise of Linux and OpenSource (reverse these to be more correct--OpenSource came first) is to establish a new paradigm in how SW is developed and distributed. In so doing, we have the potential for users to have more choices. This promise has been fulfilled many times over.
Will Linux topple the MS monopoly? No---nor was that ever a goal. But, watch Google, who is incidentally a big user and supporter of OpenSource SW.Posted 11-14-2009 at 07:59 AM by pixellany

Preplogic.com - I like it. Makes me feel smart.
Congrats on your A+. From here I think that Net+ is a good way to go. That should help you with getting your foot in the door. Then once you're on the job you can get experience toward a CCNA or MCITP or something, but in the meantime you can go with Security+. It seems like a lot of companies are looking for security certs right now. It's good that you're on the preplogic unlimited program - you should take advantage of that to really beef up your resume. any job prospects yet? keep us posted.Posted 11-13-2009 at 10:13 AM by mauhong1

So when should one upgrade?
I agree with you on your upgrade opinons. If your software is working with no problems then why upgrade? I even hesitate on Security some times. It seems everytime I do an upgrade there are other problems created that have to be worked out.Posted 11-13-2009 at 06:53 AM by Larry Webb

The rpm package
First we need to make sure which distro you are trying to install this package. Then we need to know where you downloaded it to (Desktop, cd, Documents, etc). Next it help to know what package.

Passed A+!
So as expected I passed my 2nd A+ exam on Friday. So that's on my resume now and I'm excited. I don't think I would have been able to accomplish that in such a short time without Preplogic. Now I need some help with what's next. I don't know whether to go for Net+, Security+ or just straight for CCNA? Does anyone have any advice?Posted 11-09-2009 at 08:57 AM by lnarea

Partioning
Most distro cds will make a default partition where they take about half of the hd space if you have one other distro. If it is a large distro (ubuntu, suse, fedora) with a lot of programs in their repositories and eye candy than I recommend no less than 12 gig min space for your partition.Posted 11-08-2009 at 01:38 PM by Larry Webb
