terminal won't launch in kde

I'm running KDE 3.5 on a RHEL 5.5 32bit box and about a week ago I lost the ability to lauch a terminal window.

I have tried many things: log out and back in, move the ~/.kde to a ~/.old_kde, various ways to launch a terminal window, etc. If I log onto another system, I get the same thing. I would figure it's a profile thing, but if I have kde create a new profile it should go away. Gnome is unaffected.
