Edit 2011-09-19:
This was written shortly after the 1 Febuary 2011 press release; but got left, unfinished, in "drafts".
Although I don't remember what else I was going to say, I am posting it now.
Needless to say, it deserves some updating about the last 9 months developments.

On 11 Febuary 2011, Nokia entered a strategic alliance with Microsoft, and announced it would replace Symbian and MeeGo with Windows Phone 7. Nokia will, however, retain Symbian for use in mid-to-low-end devices and invest into the Series 40 platform and release a single MeeGo product in 2011.
Well that's maybe not the full story, & it may not be as bad for Linux as it appears. I found this press release*: "Nokia outlines new strategy, introduces new leadership, operational structure".
Consider the implications of these excerpts:

Nokia Corporation
Stock exchange release
February 11, 2011 at 09.45 (CET+1)
This is an official press release, subject to Stock exchange rules. It is probably as honest a statement as you ever get from a corporation.

Under the new strategy, MeeGo becomes an open-source, mobile operating system project. MeeGo will place increased emphasis on longer-term market exploration of next-generation devices, platforms and user experiences. Nokia still plans to ship a MeeGo-related product later this year.
MeeGo is not being completely replaced.

Smart Devices will be responsible for building Nokia's leadership in smartphones and will be led by Jo Harlow. The following sub-units now in Mobile Solutions will move under Smart Devices:
- Symbian Smartphones
- MeeGo Computers
- Strategic Business Operations
To support the planned new partnership with Microsoft, Smart Devices will be responsible for creating a winning Windows Phone portfolio.
  • Symbian is not being replaced.
  • MeeGo is not being replaced.
  • The new partnership with Microsoft is only "planned".
