Mate LIve CD

Is this a source based distro? If so, installing the Mate livecd, would it be best to recompile it?

Thnx.

What MATE? Ubuntu MATE? Mint MATE? Some other MATE?

What exactly do you mean by "source based distro"?

Strictly speaking, any distro under the GPL is a source-based distro, as sources must be available for download, inspection, and redistribution.

If you mean "source-based" in the sense that Gentoo is source-based (as opposed to a distro that installs pre-compiled binary files), most distros are not source-based in that sense.

Generally, there would be no point in recompiling a distro's files. If you want to go the compiling route, install Gentoo.

frankbell, I'm referring to AryaLinux Mate. Their website say the livecd is using Mate DE. Yes, source-based similar to Gentoo, Funtoo, Crux, SourceMage etc.

rokytnji, thanks for your info.

I was curious if one install the Mate livecd, would he/she need to recompile it once installed. Some source-based distros you install a base binary system then recompile it for your hardware.
I understand now days, one really doesn't need to compile distros as much.

Thanks.

FredGSanford, this is sort of hybrid as in you can install the live DVD as well as use it to compile the entire system from source. When you install the system the binaries of applications that are part of the live DVD get installed as is. When you use the builds scripts that are also present in the live dvd you can create the whole system by compiling sources. If you would like to understand how AryaLinux works you can get an idea by reading the Linux from scratch and beyond Linux from scratch books. This distro is more of a task automation for the books.

That being said use it whichever way you like either install it or build from source. Follow the docs in the website and build the system from scratch and by system I mean your system. The build scripts don't build a Gentoo or Slack or ubuntu for you. You build your own system, choose your packages and build distributable DVDs if you want. So far till the system architecture where you are building the system matches the architecture of the system where you are running it you should have no problem.

And one more thing being a source based distro if you are installing the system using the DVD and you would like to install additional packages their source tarballs would be downloaded and compiled from source and installed.

So if you have some time(it takes around a day or two to build a complete XFCE/Mate desktop with applications. Your internet speed also determines the time) it's better to build things from source. It's really a cake walk to be honest to build from source. All it takes is time and patience.
