I am a n00b to the wonderful world of Linux, and I am having some issues that I cannot seem to resolve. I have a Compaq 2525US laptop with the infamously pain in the ass ATI Radeon IGP 345M video card. I can access the command line prompt and root, and still (unfortunately) have Windows XP on a partition of the same drive to basically save my ass and play backup (such as now). Now, I know it's been asked a million times, just from lurking a little here and there. Is there a driver out there that I can simply put on a 3 1/2" or something so that I can finally get a GUI to work on this heap?

Like I said, I'm a so I have no idea how to use the command prompts whatsoever. It took me half an hour to figure out how to shut it down, if that gives you any idea. I decided upon Mandrake after having issues install RH 8 from a DVD (complete reference guide edition). So, basically, I beg upon your combined intellects for a small bit of help. I know people have gotten this to work, but I'm lost in the sauce without a mug.

First of all... are you sure there are conflicts with your video card? Type "startx" and see if you can get the graphic display to work. If there are any errors, please give them to us here.

You should surf the web page of your video card to download drivers if not. However, beware. I think I read somewhere they give some trouble. But I get that's better than nothing

I've been rather persistent with this whole video card thing, and I've even re-installed multiple times to try to fix the error, but that doesn't help at all. I have at one point in time managed to get a test window to come up during the installation, and the settings appeared to work under those conditions (integrated 64mb Intel Maui motherboard something or other) but it refuses to load into a GUI of any kind. I'll jump on the startx in a bit and get back to you on that, but right now it's late as hell and I have to crash, so I'll be back with resultes in a few hours or so. Thanks for the tip on startx by the way.

Edit: Nevermind the sleep thing for a moment. I followed your advice and came up with the following:

XIO: FATAL IO ERROR 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

Also, I noticed that when I use shutdown -r now I get a failure. Stopping Window Display Manager fails when I shutdown, whether it be -h or -r, it always fails. Any advice y'all can throw me I'll be grateful. I'm now starting to wonder if it is something else besides the video card. Monitor is configured as 1024x768 flatscreen (60hz) and video card is configured as mentioned before, Integrated with Intel Maui something or other, seeing as how it leaches off my memory, that's what I figured it may be. It's still under ATI, just not Radeon. Could that be part of the problem??

Well, after 4 installs, video card is now working, but how I got it to work I have no idea. I now have no audio device. I am in Gnome 2.4 and it says there is no audio device present, do I have to track down the driver for linux for the sound card, or is it possible it's just not configured correctly?
