Want to install Arch for first time; hints and suggesstions please...?

OK

last time I tried installing Arch
it was a mess and total failure
my I'm sure

Now, I know alot more about linux and so wanna try a install
via net-install cd.

questions

1) arch has a installer similar to debian/slackware yes or no?
text or gui doesn't matter

2) what desktops are available for arch?

3) is arch similar to slackware wherein I can build from source or use pacman?

Please note I have no windows on any PC here
just linux and dont wanna mess that up
I have a 15gb partition ready and hope Arch can fit in there?
tahnks

I would suggest to take a look at
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/..._Install_Guide
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/...indow_managers

The install guide on the Arch wiki is very good. The wiki also has the answers to many of your questions.

A few things that come to mind:
  • Always install the "develop" option, in addition to "base".
  • Know your internet connection parameters ahead of time
  • Do the initial internet setup in /etc/rc.conf
  • Start with a wired connection
  • After the initial install, do a full system upgrade before adding any SW
  • Set up the mirrors using the "rankmirrors" command. (See the wiki under mirrors)
  • When installing X, remember that you need to separately install input and video drivers.
  • Install XFCE first, even if you're eventually going to install another WM or DE. XFCE is small, and you can start it directly without a login manager or any configuring. This will give you a GUI while you are sorting out how to configure various things.
  • Once things are working, install WICD and disable the previous network setup. WICD outshines any connection manager I have ever seen.

The Beginner's Guide is a little easier to follow than the Official Installation Guide, in my opinion.

Quote:
1) arch has a installer similar to debian/slackware yes or no?
text or gui doesn't matter

2) what desktops are available for arch?

3) is arch similar to slackware wherein I can build from source or use pacman?
1) Yes. It's text based.

2) All the major DE's and many window managers. Which did you have in mind?

3) Yes. Read this and this.

Well you can also have a look at ArchBang!
EDIT: It's RC1 and meant for testing only!

Probably more similar to slackware.

Pretty much all of them. I use LXDE, a truly lightweight desktop environment. (I do not regard XFCE as lightweight.)

As for installing it - have the documentation on hand and work patiently through it. Arch isn't a fire-and-forget install. It will help if you have another machine that you can check things on the internet with.

Depends if you want a configured openbox desktop out of the box.

I shouldn't have suggested "ArchBang" just like that, instead I should have requested if you could help us by testing it. My bad! ArchBang is now going through heavy testing and we have received a huge response not only from Arch community but from ubuntu, crunchbang, etc. We even made it in LXer.com frontpage! I'm still not done hacking the AIF [ /arch/setup ] completely! There have been various bug reports but nothing deadly to nuke your system as I left the partitioning and disk functions untouched. Please make any bug-report in Arch forum thread or if you don't have an account there and don't want to create one either, just email me!

no doubt shylock

all my PC's are testbeds so its cool as long as my other installs (20+) are safe
I break a couple systems each day so I also learn how to fix'em too
LOL

actually Fedora 12 is the only distro that actually "hurt" my PC's
weird beepng noises, freezing screens, whirring motors, etc
so, no Fedora for me anymore

Arch, Slackware, Crux or BLFS... these are the most reliable ones... although CRUX and BLFS are not for everyone, IMHO...

in BLFS yu do not have yum install internet-explorer or apt-get install defrag.exe ROFL
