I get the above error message during booting my arch system.
it then throws me to the safe terminal.
I run fsck on my filesystem and reboot it and afterwards it works.
even though - the problem keeps returning
I suspect that it is somehow related to the fact that I'm dual booting ubuntu (karmic beta) and arch.
they are on the same hard drive and share the same home partition. I have a feeling that it's somehow related but can't track the issue.
It sounds like your ubuntu install is changing the system clock and it's getting skewed when you boot into the other os. You may want to look into changing you ubuntu install to not mess with the system clock.

That's what happened to me when I was dual-booting Slackware and Ubuntu. If I booted into Slack after Ubuntu, the clock was one hour slow.
