Strange arch string 'x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu' on Arch64

I just installed Arch64 on my laptop. I've never used a 64bit-OS before and I'm wondering why my CHOST variable is set to 'x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu'? I've heard I shouldn't mess with this, but is this wrong? Shouldn't it be 'x86_64-pc-linux-gnu'? It gets a lot of hits with google, but I couldn't find any explanations.

Nothing wrong with that triplet. The triplet represents cpu-vendor-os. The unknown or pc part of the triplet is intended to be set to the distributor of your distro. In your case it would be x86_64-arch-linux-gnu. The target triplet is used in the configure stage of building gnu software. config.guess returns x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu if it detects an x86_64 platform running Linux so you might as well leave it alone.
