Sound comes and goes in Flash, no media players work, system sounds generally DO work

I installed Arch last night and have KDE up and running, as well as firefox, and chromium. I also have flash working with nspluginwrapper. Sound somtimes works in flash, sometimes it doesn't. I've never gotten a single sound out of amarok, juk, mplayer, or dragon player. Oddly enough system sounds always work when logging in and logging out even though KDE will frequently tell me that "sound device hda-intel-xxx does not work...." or something to that effect. Sound works fine on multiple installations of Slackware and Salix, and has worked without issue on PC-BSD, Ubuntu, and Mandriva.

Any ideas on what I'm looking for will be appreciated.

I've switched to PulseAudio server a while back and it seems to be easier to manage all the different types of Linux audio servers and clients.

Thanks for the reply. In my case it turned out to be a power failure that had corrupted the permissions on the samba share that contains the music and a conflict with the hdmi audio on my nvidia card. The hdmi audio never got picked up with the older drivers, I guess that's new in the 256.xx driver?
